11 Jun 2024 – Hands on Night

 In Hands on Nights

Hands on Night

This month’s Hands on Night was not as busy as normal, but it was still a good night and all those attending all seem to have had an enjoyable evening.  All four lathes were in use with Chris, Darren, John and Zak manning them whilst Mick was set up selling off some various tools and equipment at bargain prices.  It was good to see Zak back in action where he helped a new member with some further instruction following the previous training day sessions he had received.  We endeavour if anyone wants to have a go on the lathe to do so,  so it was good to see all instructors were kept busy.

Out in the Shop, our Shop keepers had a busy time sorting out a recently delivery of Chestnut products, plus we have reduced the pen kits and projects kits to half price, so if you have not tried making some pens or these small projects , now is the time to give it ago.  As there are some spaces appearing as the old stock gradually reduces, we are looking at what else would you like us to stock which other members might also like to try, such as some of the Hampshire Sheen range of products.  It’s your Club Shop so what do you want us to stock to make your life easier and save you a bob or two?  You can either leave comments on this post, send us an email or better still post a WhatsApp message in the Club Shop Chat group.

Not many items on the exhibition table this month, but those that were displayed were more examples of some fantastic work made by our talented members. To show you what you can do with the clocks that we have on sale in the shop (also at reduced prices), Zak brought along some items he has made.  Also, Chris has been busy recently learning how to do thread chasing so we had some rather splendid little screw top boxes that he has made.  Lets see what you have all been making next month and or send us some photos to go into next Tuesdays Shop and Tell.

Notices:

If anyone is interested in making walking stick shafts for a Mr Roger Dixon who has contacted the Club to earn some money, please get in touch with Martin for contact details.

We have recently been contacted about the potential for either individuals or better still the Club members making some items out of some Yew that has been recently felled in Old Bollingbroke Churchyard.  These items will then hopefully be sold in a small visitor centre that is being set up.  This would be a good PR activity for the Club and we hope you will all get actively involved and offer to help in making some items.  Further information will be provided when we know it.

As per our previous news post, we have set up a WhatsApp Community that will help us getting information out to you.  Within the Community there are separate Groups set up for different areas to chat about woodturning and Club related matters and interact with other members.  Its your choice if you join in or not, but hopefully you will find it useful as a lot of you don’t get to chat with each other in between our meetings.  Please make sure you set up your notifications correctly, as the default setting for WhatsApp is you will get informed about everything that happens which you may or may not be interested in and this may get or has already got annoying.  For each Group whether it be for our Club or any other Group you may be involved in, you can set up the notifications differently.  It would be recommended and helpful for us that whilst you may decide to mute all notifications on certain Groups or decide not to join them, please stay in the Community Announcements group so that you will get to see any important posts that the Club Admin issues.

Training Days, only 2 x 3 hr sessions left available in September, so don’t miss out, book now if interested.

For more photos of the evening please check out the Gallery.

And finally,

18 Jun 2024 – Workshop Night.  The meeting links will be sent out over the next few days, so if you have not had it by Sunday evening, check your spam/junk mail and if not in there, please get in touch. Also, if you have any photos to go into the last Show and Tell, please send them in by no later than Monday 7pm.  The Dropbox link to send them to will be in the email.  Thanks.

A good night as usual. The WhatsApp groups already seem to have stirred members interest. Good to see that the club is attracting interest with a fantastic donation of a lathe and tools and a local village asking us to make products out of their felled yew tree for them to sell. I didn’t spend a lot of time in the hall but the atmosphere seemed very vibrant despite the lower that usual numbers

Good to hear local communities are asking the club to help with their fallen Yew tree. Along with the walking stick request and the donated lathe helps to promote the club to others. A good evening again even if there where fewer members there as stated all 4 lathes where occupied.
