Newark Show Information & 9 Jan 2024 – Hands on Night

In Hands on Nights, National Events

Newark Woodworking Show

Newark Show 8-9 Mar 2024   The Club will be on Stand 84 at the Newark Show again this year.  We would like to display items of your work on the Stand like we have done in the past.  Last year, we had over 110 items of members work which gave us a fantastic display admired by many visitors to the Stand.  Can you please bring any items you would like for us to display at the next Hands on Night on 13 Feb 24. Please clearly mark each item and the box with your full name and package accordingly to enable safe transfer to and from the show.  The Club will take care of your item(s) but as it’s a public show we will not be held responsible for any breakages.  If you can’t make it on the 13 Feb, we also have a Training Day on the Sat 17 Feb 24 at the Village Hall, so you could drop them off during the day.  We will be looking at loading up trailer/van/cars at some time over the previous weekend 2/3 Mar, date time TBC.

The last plea is for help in getting everything to and from the show, setting up on the Thurs 7 Mar 24, manning the stand over two days, demonstrators on the lathe and packing it up at the end.  We need someone with a trailer and towing vehicle or a van that can offer their services.  If able to help in anyway, please let me know asap so we can come up with a plan.  Last year, we had lots of help which was great, but at times we probably had too many on the Stand, so we may not necessarily take up everyone’s offer of assistance.

Hands on Night

We would like to wish you all a happy New Year and welcome you to another year of woodturning.  Our first Hands on Night had a fairly good attendance with 30 members and one new guest who had pre-booked his place on a lathe.  We would obviously like to see more attending but do appreciate that everyone leads busy lives and with the dark nights and the winter weather, heading out to West Ashby might not be very appealing.

We do have some members who struggle at this time of year with driving and unless they can get a lift they might not be able to get to the Club.  So we would encourage where possible for you to lift share, to firstly save the planet and maybe make the difference in that person getting to see their mates on a Club night.  I have asked Alan Selden to draw up a list of members names and the town/post codes so show where they live, which we hope to have available at the Club in future.  This will not be available online before anyone asks.

For those who do not know, we try and allocate two lathes and two instructors per night to give you the opportunity to pre-book an hour each (four slots per night).  To book a slot, you can either do it on paper at the hall for the following month or via this website HERE.  Alternatively, go to the Events menu button and select Calendar, then find the next Hands on Night and click on it to open it. Fill in the booking part and submit it.  Your booking is then held pending until I go and approve it.  These sessions whilst perfect for a beginner to get a taster in woodturning, they are equally great if you have a problem with a project and want a bit of help from our instructors.  I would encourage you when booking to say what you want to do.

Thank you to our usual Humpers and Dumpers for setting up, clearing away and getting the kettle on and biscuits at the ready and our resident turners for manning the lathes and Pro-edge during the evening.  A BIG THANK YOU to you all as without your support we can’t do it.

The Club Shop opened its doors for the first time this year and had another busy night.  We are now stocking some timber supplied by NE-Wood-GB at very reasonable prices.  Another BIG THANK YOU, to Paul, Mel, and Dave for getting the annual stock check done at the weekend which is another job that has to be done outside that of our normal meeting nights.  It may surprise some of you, but there is a lot of work that goes on in the Club but outside of our normal meeting nights, often daily/weekly that goes unseen but enables you to have such a successful Club.

Another fantastic selection of exhibition items on the table this month which is always great to see.  We are really pleased with how the exhibition table is going and good to see a wide variety of work.  This also provides inspiration and ideas for others to try themselves and shows to the newer turners or complete beginners that woodturning is not just bowls and spindles.  Well done everyone and look forward to seeing what you have been making next month.

For more photos of the evening please check out the Gallery.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and I look forward to seeing you all next Tuesday.

And finally,

16 Jan 2024 – Online Workshop Night – The Zoom meeting links have been sent out last night, so if you have not received it, firstly check your spam/junk email inbox and if its there, click on the email and select not spam/junk to prevent it from occurring again.  If you don’t have it, please get in touch so we can sort it out.

2024 Training Days – All dates are now open to take bookings.  Some dates are filling up so please check which have slots available.  We do get the occasional cancellations, so slots may becoming available.  We do aim to fill all training day slots where possible.  Remember these are open to the public and not just members, so if you want to secure your place, book now, don’t delay.  To see what we have available and to book your place, please look HERE.

What does Chris mean by his comment. There seemed to be a good turnout for a cold January evening. As mentioned in your right up the table is doing really well a varied and excellent variation of items on display. Everyone enjoying the banter turners and camaraderie the club evokes. Thanks for another enjoyable evening.
