11 Jul 2023 – Hands on Night

Hands on Night

We had a great turn out this month with 39 attendees of which 4 were new guests who fancy taking up the hobby.  With Darren giving all four the essential H&S introductions to the lathe and PPE etc, they were then split between two lathes where they could have a go at some basic spindle work to give them a taster session.  It was great to hear that they enjoyed themselves and hopefully they will become members.

Our one lady guest was very happy to go home with a rolling pin she had made with some help from Zak.  Meanwhile Chris had his usual crowd gathered round his lathe providing suggestions on what to turn and making those design decisions, plus helping members with any turning issues they may be having.

Thanks to all the turners for their continued support making these nights so successful and not forgetting all the Humpers & Dumpers and other members for their kind assistance with setting up and clearing it all away at the end of the evening.  We can’t do it without you, so a BIG THANK YOU.

The exhibition table was very full and we had a fantastic selection of members work which is great to see.  It was also good to see some

items where things had not gone so well to share the experience and for others to learn from someone’s mistake.

Mick brought along a large amount of workshop clearance items he has for sale and there were some good bargains to be had.  Still plenty of items left, so please don’t miss out.

Dave and Paul out in the shop had another good evening and the introduction of the new point of sale system seems to be going well.  They are still learning the system so please bear with us.  A reminder that as of the 1 August, we plan to go cashless, so don’t forget your card or mobile device (if able to do the likes of Apple or Google Pay) should you want to purchase anything.  You can also pay Membership fees, PAYG tickets and Training Day fees by card in the shop.

Our very own Spindle King, Mr John Liles who was presented the Presidents Trophy at the Newark Show featured in this month’s Revolution Magazine from the AWGB providing some interesting life history and how he got into woodturning.  He is a great ambassador for the club and it was great to see that they published our article.

For more photos of the evening please check out the Gallery.

And finally,

What’s up next?

18 Jul 2023 – Workshop Night.  Meeting links will be sent out over the weekend.  If you have not had it by Monday, check your spam/junk mail and if not in there, please get in touch with Alan Buckle, the Club Secretary.  Also, if you have any photos to go into the Show and Tell, please send them to me by no later than Monday 7pm.  The Dropbox link to send them to is in the email.  Thanks.

25 Jul 2023 – Demo by Jim Echter.  PAYG members need to purchase a ticket to attend, click HERE

16 Sept 2023 – Training Day is now fully booked, but if you have missed out, please check out the 18 Nov 2023 where we still have several spaces to fill. Click HERE.

Whilst the Training Day is going on, we are having another painting party where we would like some volunteers (hopefully more than just one this time please!) who are a dab hand at painting to give the wooden lean to another coat of paint to see it through the winter months.  If you can help with this please, let us know by either leaving a comment below or use the contact form/email etc.

Another good night all round another great write by Alan S who always forgets to applaud himself for the work he does. We have a great club going at the moment so as Alan says please let’s have more volunteers when requested a lot of work goes on behind the scenes by a number of people to make your club what it is so come on volunteer for a couple of hours to relieve the burden on the few.

Had a very good evening interacting with various members. I was impressed with the various items on the exhibition table even the hollow form that went wrong. Great to see some newbies, just a shame they were not younger, need to bring down the average age of members somehow. As mentioned before by Paul a few more entries from other members would be appreciated.
