23 Jul 2022 – Training Day
TRAINING DAY
On Saturday 23rd July, we opened up the Hall bright and early to enable us to get set up for our three Instructors, Darren Brown, Chris Fisher, John Mitchell. Darren had kindly stepped in at the last minute to replace Mick, and despite being a relatively new turner did an excellent job and obviously a natural at both woodturning and instructing. A massive thank you goes out to these guys who gave up their Saturday to enable the Training Day to happen.
With a fully booked day of training ahead of us, the first 3 of 10 students arrived and were keen to get started. Each person had arranged with the instructor prior to the day as to what they would like to do or learn. Some were wanting specific help with turning projects whilst others were needing a bit of a refresher after not turning for a while or they were new beginners keen to learn the do’s and don’ts to make sure they would be safe when having a go themselves.
All of our students seemed to go away very happy with the training received. What for me, makes the day really worthwhile and a big success after all the time, effort, planning and setting up on the day, was seeing our new youngest member of the Club, Morgan, who, with the expert help and guidance from John, proudly showing off his little bowl that he had made at the end of the day. Well done Morgan!
Another big thank you goes to both Mel and Jay for keeping us all well fed during the day with ample supplies of cake, biscuits and brownies which certainly hit the mark and were very well received by all. Diet now starts Monday!
Thank you to all those that helped setting up and then clearing away at the end of a long day.
We are looking at running another Training day in possibly a couple of months, subject to the availability of the Hall and our Turners. So watch this space for any updates. On this next one we will be removing the restriction of only allowing two hours with a turner. Each hour session will remain at £10 and you will still be able to book a one hour or two hour session as necessary. However, you will now be able to book a three hour session, so effectively all morning or all afternoon, but to encourage this option to be taken up by you our members, we will only charge £25 for the 3 hours which is an absolute bargain. The idea being you can start a project and have enough time to finish it so you would be able to take home the finished item or items if you have time.
If you are interested in attending the next Training Day, can you let us know and as soon as we have some dates you will be the first to know. If you have received training yesterday, it would be great if you can leave some feedback in the comments section below. We are always looking at ways to improve what we do so it’s really important for us to hear what you think.
Following the recent construction of the enclosed lean to on the Container, this needed painting, so another big thank you to our painting team of Chris Chance, Chris Atkinson, John Cox and Denis Rowe who helped out during the day. Probably will need at least another coat of paint, but its looking really good.

See you all on Tuesday night for the online Demo by Rick Dobney.
After not doing any turning for over two years I went to the training to refresh my basic turning safety, timber mounting / preparation and safe tool handling techniques. With Darren’s patience and confidence building teaching I gained everything I want from the session. Many thanks Darren .
Thanks Martin for your feedback and pleased to hear you got what you wanted out of the session.
Well done to all concerned both trainers and students. It’s great to see new and young members having the opportunity to learn and develop their skills it can only be good for the club moving forward.
What an absolutely brilliant day. A big thank you to all the students who chose to come to me for tuition, the fees we agreed on will be payed into you PayPal accounts.🤣🤣
As soon as the dates are announced for the next training day get yourself booked in.
My training session was both enjoyable and rewarding.
Thank you to the club for providing these sessions and a big thank you to Darren for your enthusiasm, professionalism and patience.
