27 Aug 19 – Joey Richardson Demo and Competition Table

JOEY RICHARDSON DEMO

To round off a busy month, we welcomed back Joey Richardson to demonstrate the techniques required to produce her amazing pierced and airbrushed pieces of art work.  We were pleased to see a full house with a few new guests, plus one of the ladies who came to the Bizzy Fingers Craft Group hands on night.  Joey started her demo by showing how she turns the thin walled items that are needed for the piercing work.  She mainly uses Sycamore due to the plain light colour and ideal for the colouring.  The wood is cut and then frozen to keep it wet ready for turning.

She went on to show how to transfer a design on to the wood and then cut out areas with fine cutting bits using either an air tool or an electric tool such as a dremel.  She also showed the use of airbrushes to introduce vibrant colours into her work, using the Goldren range of transparent acrylic paints.  During the break, the audience were invited up to have a go.  During the second half she went into more depth on how she cuts out various shapes, blending, carving, texturing, pyrography and sanding to give items an interesting texture and finish.  The last part of her demo she showed us how to use a stencil and masking tape to introduce patterns into her work, blending in various colours with the airbrush to give some interesting effects.  Have a look on her website at the Information Page for details of the equipment she uses.

Want to see more of Joey’s work, well you don’t have to wait long.  5 – 15 Sept 19, 10:30 -17:00 daily, Joey is holding a retrospective exhibition including prints and exclusive new work at the Sam Scorer Gallery, 5 Drury Lane, Lincoln, LN1 3BN.  Check out her website for more details HERE.  You can also find her on Instagram: @joeyrichardson7.

John Radford in the Club Shop was kept busy during the evening and I believe there may still be some Lovells Workwear orders to be collected.  It was also good to see Martin & Pat Pidgen with their range of exotic and native woods for sale.  We also had Barry selling his pen kits briefly at the start of the evening.  Remember, if you you need anything specific, its worth contacting Barry Teague or Martin Pidgen (contact details HERE) to ensure they have what you want and going to be at the next meeting.

COMPETITION RESULTS

This month’s competition had yet again some excellent and interesting items and a good number of entries.  We still however need more people in the Club Class to enter as unless we have a minimum of three people, those who do, will not gain any points towards their yearly total.

Can I please remind you, to find time to vote on the table, as the number of votes received verse the number of people attending is alot lower.  If people can find time to bring items along to take part, please do your bit and vote using the relevant coloured slips for each class.  Just write on all three slips, the item numbers in each class you either: like the best, looks the best, finished the best, technically the best or its just a shape you like.  You don’t have to be an experienced turner to vote, you just need to have an opinion.  If there is only one or a couple of entries in a class please still vote.
