ROBIN BARLOW DEMO

Despite it being a rather wet and windy evening we had a good turnout for our last demonstration of the year.  We welcomed back Robin Barlow from the Erewash Valley Woodturners Association who we last saw in July 2017 and then previously in April 2015.  Robin started the evening with an Acorn Box which was turned and textured with a burr to give it a realistic look.  Then he moved onto making a matching Oak Leaf Dish for the Acorn to sit on.  With the festive session rapidly approaching, he went to making a little Christmas Tree and finished the evening off with the festive favourite, a Snowman.  There are more photos in the Gallery.

COMPETITION RESULTS

This, our last of the monthly competitions bring the annual competition to a close.  We were somewhat lacking in items this month, but those that were there, were excellent as usual.  We have some very talented turners amongst us and great to see how our new turners are progressing really well.  Well done to all those that have entered this year and of course to all the guys running the Competition Table, namely, Peter Barrack, Chris Fisher, Stuart Sherburn and other members that lend a hand on the night, that it won’t happen without them.  Cheers guys.

Well done to both Ady Backhouse in the Novice Class who has reached 16 points and therefore will be moving up to the Club Class in the New Year.  Likewise, Ian Flack has reached 31 points and will move up to Open Class also in the New year.  We are looking at some competition rule changes in the New Year so watch this space.

For those going to the Christmas function, don’t forget the Christmas Turning Competition, lets have a few more entries this year please.  Then, next year at the AGM, we will have the Turning of the Year Competition, so please bring along items that have been made between Jan 18 AGM and Jan 19 AGM.  See the Competition page for the rules of both these competitions.

Club Shop Opening in December

Mick Close and John Radford have very kindly decided to open up the Club Shop on two days in December.  The first day is the 15th and again on the 29th Dec, both days are between 10am to 12 midday.  Please support them and the Club by popping in and stocking up for Christmas to keep you turning until the New Year.  Thanks guys.

We now have a revamped Calendar on the website which can be found HERE which have all the dates to remember.  Keep checking back on it as we add the programme for next year and other important dates for your diary as we hear about them.

We have also just received a Compatibility Chart as a downloadable pdf from Chestnut Products which provides a matrix to clearly show which product can be used with what product without disastrous consequences.  Go to our Download page under the Members Area to find it or click HERE.

And finally,

Well this year has flown by and we will have to wait to see what Santa brings us all.  I am hoping for some new chisels to replace some of my shorter ones I inherited.  What are you hoping for?  Put it in the comments below?  Its great to see interaction between our members via the website by placing comments on News Posts.  As a New Year’s resolution, how about getting more involved in your Club and commenting more.  I did ask before, but had no response, but would you like a forum where you can post questions, queries etc onto for other members to answer seeing as we only meet up twice a month?

Hope to see several of you at the Christmas function at the Splash on the 11th Dec, but if you can’t make it, hope you all have a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year.  I look forward to seeing you all on the first Hands on Night of the year on the 8 Jan 2019.

I admire your persistents in trying to get more members to post on here.
