Chairman’s Notes for Tuesday 30th October 2018

 In Notices

A warm welcome to all our members and guests especially any new members.

We had a good turnout at the last ‘hands on night’ with several guests who we hope will become members. Thanks to all our resident turners who manned the lathes on the night and to Mick & Peter for running the club shop.

Thanks to one of our members from Burgh-le-Marsh, Frank Ladlow who brought along samples of segmented turning. He has offered instruction to any member who is interested, and he is happy for members to visit him at his workshop. He can be contacted on 01754 811556.

We had an All Day demonstration with Emma Cook ‘The Tiny Turner’ on the 20 October 18. Emma made a hanging Christmas Bauble complete with LED lights, two different Cup Cake boxes with carved lids and gave instruction on sharpening Carving Chisels. Emma gave lots of detailed information on techniques throughout the day. If you did not come you missed a great day.

The Kits for the ‘Hanging Baubles’ are available in the Club Shop.

All our demonstrations are recorded and DVD’s produced (with permission of the demonstrators). We have a collection of over 100 DVD’s available for you to purchase or hire; see Jay for further information

You all may be aware of the ‘Offensive Weapons Bill 2017-19 (Article 15)’, which if passed in its present form will prevent any sharp objects being delivered to a residential address. It is not too late to sign the online petition to remove ‘Article 15’ from the Bill which at the present time (Sunday 28/10) stands at 23,644 signatures. It needs to reach 100,000 for it to be debated in parliament. The Bill should have had its third reading and report stage on Monday 22 October 18. This was postponed to a date yet to be announced, so we still have a chance!

Tickets are available for our Christmas Dinner at ‘The Splash’ Little Cawthorpe. Tuesday 11 December 18. Available from John at the desk £12.50.

We still require more prizes for our Air Ambulance Raffle.  If any member could approach a local business where they have a contact and persuade them to donate a prize it would be appreciated.  The website now has a full list of prizes donated so far.

Thanks to all who donated discarded clothing, shoes, bedding and handbags etc. Please continue to bring items to our collection point, as this is an excellent way to contribute to the Air Ambulance.

Tickets for the Grand Draw will be available by the next ‘hands on’ night so we need members to buy tickets and sell as many as possible. They will cost £1 each and be in books of 5.

Don’t forget to visit our shop as we have a full range of finishing products and many other interesting items – all at bargain prices.

Just a few more dates for your diary:

Our next ‘Hands On Night’ 13 November 18 (with pen turning demonstration.)

LAW- Leasingham – 20 November 18 – Matthew Gardner

North of England Woodworking and Power Tool Show – Harrogate, 16 – 18 November 2018.

Our Demonstrator for the 30 October 18 is Phillip Greenwood.

I hope to see you all then, Geoff
