Rick Dobney, Richard Findley Demos and Table Results
Wow, we have had a busy few days and not much time between them, so sorry for the delay in posting.
Our all day demonstration with Rick Dobney on Sat 21 Apr was a great day out for only £10, albeit not very well supported by our members, however, those that did, made it a worthwhile and we had an enjoyable day. We certainly had an inspiring and idea filled day from Rick. We were shown a full log bowl with a natural edge including the different ways to mount and what to expect from different blanks. A square lidded box that you could experiment with your own decoration. Rick gave us another short tour of his, own designed, jig for off centre turning. Always one to try and share new things he also turned a small goblet with an aluminium stem. A enjoyable day for those who attended, Thanks to the committee for putting on a good day.
Then on Tues 25 Apr, Richard Findley gave us us a great presentation on face and spindle turning, useful for both novice and accomplished turners as he explained in detail the Skew chisel and the difference between that and the spindle gouge and how they can both be used for intricate work. Turning a piece of pine, illustrated the way that timber reacts to the tools. An enjoyable evening with a really good turnout, a few nice pieces on the competition table, well done to all the winners and entrants. Next hands on night 8th May, the year is running away with us, so see you all then.
We trialled a slightly different format to the evening to see how it would go. The Chairman’s Notes provided by News Post the day before, enables the turner to get started a lot quicker. The raffle was drawn quickly and efficiently, which enabled a 20 minute tea break to be had. Then back on with the turning much quicker, which then finished at 9:45pm. This left the presentation of the well deserved competition table winners, which took place in a slower manner, so not to make it feel rushed. We would like to thank all those members that are helping out with the setting up and packing away at the end of the night. It is much appreciated as many hands make light work which means we all get to go home a lot earlier. So a BIG THANK YOU.

New format for raffle and chairmanship notes is a great idea as they can be reread at leisure if required.

Good morning I think the new format was excellent, the only thing that I think could be improved upon is the congestion for tea and coffee. It did appear to work better when it was in the other room.
Thanks Brian, the bar area was closed for a function later that night. We have done the refreshments from there in the past and we had a problem with it of which I can’t remember what it was.
